So what is Miss Pinup Australia?

Good questions! Miss Pinup Australia is, right now, the world's biggest Vintage Beauty Pageant running. Started by Miss Pixie, of Boogie Bop Dames photographic studios in Sydney, about two years ago now, this pageant is mushrooming fast, with more women (and men now too!) entering every year. Miss Pixie says this of the pageant: 'Miss Pinup Australia is open to all women, real women of all shapes, sizes & ages with a love for vintage glamour. But where did Miss Pinup start, and what is a Vintage Beauty Pageant anyway?

Google vintage beauty pageants....they used to be a really big deal! Beauty pageants ran all over the world; the USA especially got really enthusiastic about them, but we had our fair share down here also! The girls would parade in daywear, evening wear, and swimsuits, and perform 'talents;' little mini- performances designed to show off their unique gifts and skills. Judging was strict, and you can still see online the very specific guidelines about body flaws, 'correct' proportions and conformation of girls...as numerous feminist writes soon pointed out, very similar to judging placards used for cattle at agricultural shows!

And of course the modern beauty pageants seem to have pinched all the slightly dodgy ideas, seeming to resemble a cross between a day out with Barbie and a Victoria's Secret parade without any of the interesting underwear. The glamour and grace present in the original pageants, together with the variety of interesting talents displayed by the women involved, seems to have been left out somewhere along the line. And that's where Miss Pixie comes in!

Miss Pixie has worked in costume, set design, and photography for over 30 years, and her business Boogie Bop Dames is all about helping women feel beautiful again. Not just pretty, or sexy, or young; but real, valued and treasured beauty. The kind we usually only feel on our wedding day, or those rare occasions when we go to a ball or dance. But Pixie wanted more...and with the increased interest in 40s and 50s style and culture, the idea came to her! An opportunity for women to wear amazing Vintage outfits of their own choosing, and doll themselves up in pinup-perfect hair and makeup of that era. An opportunity for women to get to know other women interested in the same things, and support each other, and be supported by each other. An opportunity to strengthen the creative, diverse community of 40s and 50s enthusiasts all over Australia. And most importantly, a chance for women of all sizes, shapes, ages and backgrounds, to feel beautiful again.

So the Miss Pinup Australia Pageant was born! I'll leave you with a brief run down of the different categories, as I think they really demonstrate why this pageant is so popular, and so important. For more, have a look at our Photo Gallery from the Qld Finals, or pop along to the
